A very strange case

A very strange case - I read that they went bankrupt in January 2019 and their clients switched to other operators. But, my friend made a switch to them in October 2021 and the gas card works normally ... What is going on ?????

Closed down by Ofgem.

Ofgem closed down Economy Energy in January 2019 following an official investigation into the supplier. In June 2018, the Economy Energy suffered backlash after customers complained about money being removed from their bank accounts without notice or explanation. The main reason for complain was that customers insisted that their accounts had been in order and that they owed no money to the supplier. This signaled the beginning of the end for the supplier. Customer complaints led to Ofgem opening a formal investigation, and at the beginning of 2019, the regulatory body banned the supplier from taking on new customers. One week later, the energy company ceased trading.

This company is shambolic

This company is shambolic. I could see big trouble ahead, including big price hikes so I switched at the earliest opportunity. My account was in credit, enough to cover the closing account so I cancelled the DD's. Just as well, as they tried to take them but my bank refused. They e-mailed me saying I must reinstate- Like hell!. I'm still owed money yet I doubt that I'll see it. What has gone wrong with our energy supply system. It's a mess. Unfortunately Maggie Thatcher-god rest her soul surely didn't see this mess. It needs-nationalising.

HOW ECONOMY ENERGY SOLVE THEIR CASH FLOW PROBLEMS

After being overcharged by £300 last year, I regularly give Economy Energy two accurate meter readings every month (for Gas - I had to frequently telephone as their on-line system didn't work for months). Despite my efforts, they have inserted an UNKNOWN source estimate for electricity which reveals that I used 4000 Kwh in ONE DAY. I have spoken with them and they can't explain what happened (system generated). They promised me that billing would be adjusted. I was subsequently asked for and supplied photographs of my current meter readings and another promise was made to adjust billing and my Direct Debits. All to no avail as I see on-line they are about to extort an additional £102 per month Direct Debit on !st January for electricity. Why does the Government's Official Regulators continue to sit on their hands and not act by withdrawing this "Rogue Traders" licence to operate. They cannot be oblivious to the sheer volume of complaints. If I can't get this sorted before the end of January 2019, it will require me to stop my Direct Debits and go with an alternative supplier. As far as the early penalty goes for changing supplier, they can sit on their phone for hours like I did and I will give them the same quality of service as I received. I'm not in favour of public hangings but for this Board of Directors I would make an exception for their cavalier attitude towards elderly and vulnerable people.

do Not use

They raised their prices very soon after joining and are ignoring all communications and after 3 months have still nor given me a final bill after leaving them and certainly no signs of the monies they owe me. This is even worse as they still took a direct debit after I had changed suppliers and did not think this was a problem when I complained.

£500 owed to me - delaying tactics used to not pay

Economy Energy owe me over £500 as I’ve changed supplier - they are unhelpful, change their story, cancel bills & use delaying tactic to the extent that I believe they are in financial difficulty. After 12months with them I was over £300 in credit and asked for a refund ... they just didn’t get it that that was after a full year, 4 seasons including a winter - apparently they couldn't refund until I was 4 x my monthly direct debit in credit .... I have since Aug tried to get this refunded to the extent that I changed suppliers ...... the credit continued to grow

DO NOT ENTER A CONTRACT WITH THIS COMPANY

DO NOT ENTER A CONTRACT WITH THIS COMPANY, They’re a bunch of cowboys. They put the price up on a contract that was on a fixed tariff, they still owe me £452 and no sign of a refund after leaving 10 weeks ago, looks like I have to go to small claims court to get my refund. They seem to pass the buck and don’t respond to emails. DON’T WASTE YOUR TIME WITH THIS COMPANY.

EE using my bank account to help fix their cash flow.

Like others EE prepared gas and electric bills using grossly overestimated readings in spite of me submitting monthly readings. They added 3 - 4 months usage into the estimates which were submitted by "unknown". The bills were followed by notice that my DD were being increased. I complained by email and apart from the auto reply no comment from EE. Gave up trying to to phone them. Obviously EE are using my bank account to help fix their cash flow problems. So what do I do? If nothing I am going to build up a large balance. If I stop the DD they will probably put me into the standard variable tariff. Can't complain to the ombudsman for 8 weeks and then what? Complete and utter failure by Ofgem to regulate these crooks!!

Now refunded after I issued a court claim online

I left EE in September and they eventually finalised my account in early November owing me a large refund. After being stonewalled by EE I sent their customer services team an email giving them 7 days to refund me, then I issued a court claim online for a £35 fee. EE refunded me before the court deadline for them to submit a defence. They also paid me the £35 court fee. Seems the quickest way to get a refund as the Ombudsman seems pretty toothless from earlier reviews. The online claim process is quick and easy.

Charlatans

Like many, I am owed money since switching in September. After many attempts to elicit payment, I started a money claim in December. EE have requested (and been granted) an extension on this-so no sign of any resolution yet. Additionally, EE have taken it upon themselves to modify my final bill -in their favour- since my claim was started. EE are definitely lurking behind shady business practices. They need to be held accountable and brought to justice. UPDATE: EE have now also produced a *new* electricity final bill. I had a bill six weeks after leaving already and have initiated a money claim using these figures. The new bill includes units of electricity on a different(increased) tariff to the one I was on. At no point was I advised of any tariff change. Legally, in order to impose a tariff change, suppliers must give at least 30 days notice. So this would appear to be another grubby move by EE; an attempt to dispute the amount claimed and void the money claim perhaps? Bring on the court, I’m ready.

Go to your bank and use charge back asap

Got my money back im owed with charge back in the bank. Had enough of them saying the refund is on track and nothing being done. Waited over 4 months for the refund. I have reported them to ogem, citizens advice and the Ombudsman. If your owed money do the same. This company is the worst company I have ever dealt with in my life and deserves to go under to stop them robbing people's money! Zero stars is awarded not one as can not go less!!
