Had a great experience with mint rentals. Staff were very friendly and helpful. Vehicles are good value for money. Clear instructions for airport pickup. I recommend mint.

Horrible experience
Horrible experience. The cars are old, all secondhand import from China. They have high kilometers, and the dashboard and interface are all in Chinese. So when there is an error or warning, you need to speak Chinese or hire a translator, I guess. The first car we got had starting problems. We found out 2 hours after pickup, when we tried to start the car for the first time after pickup. The first response of Mint Car Rentals was that we should just contact road assistance. Only after much protest from us did they send a mechanic. Unfortunately, this did not solve the problem. Even though the mechanic said the car is fine and got it started with jumpcables, they problems remained. After 2 more times of not being able to start it (and our takeaway food getting cold because we were stuck in a parkinglot) they finally agreed to give us a different car. But instead of bringing the car to us, we had to drive over 1 hour back to the rental office to pick it up. Instead of an apology for all the inconvenience, the employee told us that we should have actually filled up the gas before exchanging the car. The second car was also old and Chinese. It had one door that didn't lock (we found out by chance, after 3 days), the steering wheel was not aligned, and the tires were completely worn down. Luckily, this one didn't break down during our trip. Update 12th of april 2025 After posting this review here and on Google, we received an email from Mint Car Rentals. In the email, they apologised for the lack of service and offered us a 20% refund of the hire charges, which we accepted.

Full recommended, ideal for last minute bookings, very good price! Very helpful with people like us that had never drive on the left side of the street, we asked for a nice place to visit between our 6 hours connection flight departure. Long live Piha beach!

Really good experience
I got a great deal with Mint. We had a Nissan Tilda for 7 weeks. It was an older model 2007 but it ran with no issues and was really economical. We drove over 6000kms with no issues. The boot space is massive, good for keeping luggage out of sight. Service from Mint was very good with quick responses to my emails. I highly recommend them

Help when I Needed It
I was one of the unfortunate tourists stranded in Golden Bay when Cyclone Gita wrecked the Takaka Hill Road. Mint Rentals, from whom I was renting a car, were very understanding of the predicament we were in but readily agreed for me to leave the vehicle in Takaka subject to a recovery charge which my travel insurance covered. Thanks to Mint for enabling me to get on with my NZ road trip and for promptly providing the information I needed to pursue my insurance claim in such a friendly manner.
