Review summary

Home Instead Senior Care receives a mixed response from reviewers, with a significant number expressing dissatisfaction. While some customers highlight the caring nature of individual caregivers and commend specific branches like East Bridgford and Market Harborough for their professionalism and support, many others criticize the company's management and communication. Common complaints include poor responsiveness, with several reviewers noting that calls go unanswered, leading to frustration in arranging care packages. Additionally, issues such as unpaid training, high turnover in management, and inadequate support for caregivers contribute to a negative perception. Despite a few positive experiences, the overall sentiment leans heavily towards disappointment, indicating that many find the service lacking.

After training and starting work at…

After training and starting work at home instead Worcester, I was not informed it would be a zero contracted hours… so as I wanted to further my career in care, I got offered a job with the NHS to work and train as a nurse associate and get a degree. I got a voice mail from the manager Karen very rudely asking what is going on, as had received a reference for me, she called me into the office and asked what it was about , when I explained I wanted to further my career in care and be a nurse associate, she snotty said “ and what is that” so I explained I’d get a degree in nursing. She said I was not a fit for home instead and would not go past my probation, which is fine by me. I said I would drop my bag of supply’s off but a family member past away, I emailed Karen explaining a family member past away and would get the bag to her the next day….. I received an email from Abby stating that I would not be getting paid for the hours I’ve worked and trained for…. I emailed back stating that By law (Employment Rights Act 1996), your employer must pay your wages on your agreed pay day, I have contacted head office through phone and email and no reply…. Avoid this care service at all cost !!!!!!!!

Compassionate, trustworthy end of life care

We couldn’t have been happier with the service and care that we received. Tula in particular was a pleasure to have around at a very hard time. I would recommend Home Instead to anyone. All I ever wanted was for my Mother to pass away peacefully in her own home. This was only possible with Home Instead.

Home Instead Care - Rip Off

My elderly mother with Alzheimer's got home instead care from 16th January 2024. Unfortunately she went into hospital on 17th Feb 2024 and ended up in a nursing home so home instead had to be cancelled from that date. Whilst I cannot fault the carers that came to see mum for a total of 4 hours only per week I think the company are greedy as my mum has ended up paying £1502 for a total of 20 hours care as she had to pay an initial £200 registration fee and had to pay for 30 days after she went into hospital for no carers caring for her. Rip off company.

AVOID AVOID AVOID

lots of reaearch. This 'care' company in my experience was totally inaquate. They failed my Mum in not providing meals, left food to go bad. I had to prompt them in almost all espects of basic care requirements for my Mum. They were useless and staff changed far too often. Care staff wages very poor compared to other care companies. I changed to a far better company called 'Second to None'....total turn around for my Mum...I didnt need to supervise them. There isn't an option to provide zero stars

Despicable Service

The company ignored previous instructions derived from medical professionals to NOT give sugar to a family member which led to sugar poisoning and an emergency visit to hospital. The owner showed zero remorse which is a disgrace.

Unprofessional trainer and unpaid training... total rip-off

They will call you for unpaid induction and unpaid training with DBS cost on yourself and knowing well there is nothing to lose for them, they'll be as rough and if needed unprofessional with you only to test if they can easily push you around when you start working or not. Will make you go through a month-long online training for no pay and can very easily tell you they are not onboarding you for whatever reason when in fact its a zero-hour contract and they know they do not have enough hours to provide. Very unpleasant experience, stay away from this company. A total rip-off. (Home Instead Swansea)

Great company

Great company, I've had lots of experience with care companies and this is by far the best. Expensive but worth it for peace of mind. Far better than competition (in Cannock anyway)

This is an update to a previous review…

This is an update to a previous review and one which I am saddened to write. I originally only wanted a one off 24 hours care. The person who I spoke to advised it was better to sign up for a package so the care giver assigned to mum whilst I was away would be familiar with her routine and mum would get to know her. This did not happen. One of The care givers assigned to mum I only met the day before I flew out and I never got to meet the second carer. This meant vital information was not passed on from the carer I met to the one I didn't. Please let me stress the carer I met was lovely and very nice and I know she did her best but mum is incredibly high needs. 98 years. End stage dementia not mobile and a catheter. I was assured at time of signing up that this company specialises in this type of care. Was my mother in mortal danger? No. Could my mothers health been compromised had I been away longer? I believe so. Again everything the carers did was with good intent and I'm sure they were kind and caring to mum but I firmly believe they were not equipped training wise to care for mum. Everything I have said here I have also emailed the company with this so my comments should not be a surprise. I also accept some responsibility. I was so exhausted and stressed I wanted to believe everything they said and I should have asked more questions. Billing was also an issue. I arrived home ,to a broken washing machine, the door to my front loader had been ripped off. No note no apology. But I digress. So on the Saturday I received a message to say that the company had tried to debit my credit card for $5,500 and it had failed. Well yes I wasn't sent an invoice nor advised in advance this amount which is huge for 4 nights was going to be deducted. After much arguing and toing and froing I eventually got the cost of my new machine taken off the invoice. It has ruined my holiday and I'm more stressed than ever. To summarise this is a company. They are not a charitable institution. They are in it to make money and that's fair enough. All I'm asking is please do not make promises that cannot be fulfilled. For everyone else. Ask questions don't take things on face value. I should have stepped up and done my own due diligence which I sorely regret not doing. This company is probably no better or worse than any other. There are many care providers out there. Find the right one for you. I didn't to my regret. So I am editing this review. I have just seen the credit card amount they deducted to find they have charged me $99 more than the amended invoice I was sent. So guess I'm paying money towards my machine they broke. He very careful of this company. It's extremely sad to think they would amend and deduct extra without advising me. You know they can keep the money. I can put a full stop after this and move on knowing I am an honest person. The same cannot be said for this company.

Only want your money

Here are a few words I would describe this company Unsympathetic Pushy Greedy Demanding And charging extortionate prices in the process. My parent went from being able to walk to being hospitalised within 3 weeks of using this company and then they carried on charging us for the 30 days notice we had to give. Unbelievable.

Did not find their promises fulfilled at anytime.

After 2 years dealing with Home Instead and during a hospital stay a welfare worker spoke to me regarding the expectation I should have experienced with my provider. A second stay in hospital another welfare worker spoke of similar expectations. I was very surprised to hear that both support workers had the same reaction, I had been self managing all this time. Home Instead were not fulfilling their part of the contract. I completed to ADA Australian who opened a case against rd Home Instead and agreed that I had been self managing. I had 5 care managers during this time and found mixed attitudes of rudeness, aggressiveness, poor communication, inability to provide suitable trades, miss direction and in some cases miss reputations of the truth. Looking back now I can see I was self managing but still paying their fees. Our contract terminates on the 12 th of February.

Inconsistency of carers was a problem

Inconsistency of carers was a problem. Every second or third week we had a new carer and had to show them what to do. I was blamed by management staff from the Home Instead Wollongong branch, that I was told not to "hover" or 'micromanage' their staff. Yet, the turn around of staff was such that I had to show them what to do and because I work from home most days of the week, the carers too exception to my presence. I felt I was being blamed for the turn around of their staff when in fact I was being courteous and friendly. They sent us one carer who did not know how to cook and one who refused to cook more that one meal per day for my mother who has dementia. I felt I was getting no respite with all of the trouble of change over of staff and being blamed for something that I did not do. Amongst all of this, my mother care had declined significantly. The company only offer 11 hours per week for a level 4 package, while I found others who offered up to 16 hours per week. The indicates to me that this company is only interested in one thing $. They don't care about your elderly parents even though they say they do. I would reconsider engaging help from this company.

I wouldn’t give them a star if there’s…

I wouldn’t give them a star if there’s choice. I am the care worker over 6 years experience worked for NR care, Jark care, Maria mallaband, hales care, nursing care personal and Broadland care home all prevouse employer never have trouble with my DBs check or my work. They all left good references after I finished with the companies. This company home instead use vetting to apply dbs and I got refused which took them over 3 months to imformed me. The reason of refusal is the name incorrect which I did supplied my deed poles of name changed already and soon as I knew about the refusal I replied yet I’ll continue and try again so getting requests the proof of name changed which I sent over right away and now two weeks later they contacted me to again submit applications for DBs and supply again deedpole. They are unprofessional and poor organisation and messed up with my DBS check. Wasted my time over 3 months for job. I have been on theory training and passed all. which you all know it takes weeks to complete. So now I wasted 3 month time waiting for their dbs and been told unsuccessful can we start again! Wasted my time for unpaid training! Shame I like the company aim and their goal but I think their recruitments and management is very poor. From my 6-7 years experience of care worker I wouldn’t recommend this company. The company that don’t start well at beginning it alway gonna have trouble later on. They also messed up with the payroll nobody get pay last week and redo the payroll again! I received text from them to apologise about the late pay for last couple weeks.

If I could give less than one star I…

If I could give less than one star I would! This is one of the worst companies for senior care out there. So far none of their employees know how to cook, clean, and from our experience, know how to read. We complain to the management and get nothing but lip service. Show them pictures of what their people do to "care" for our dad and still....nothing! They should be ashamed. Bigger problem is we can't find anyone to report them to, NOBODY to hold them accountable.

They are unreliable. This is just the fifth time they have done this.

They are unreliable. They just walk off the job. They do not alert the patient. Try to find a reliable experienced caregiving company who will communicate with you, not people who just don’t show up and leave you hanging there, helpless.

Home Instead have been a lifeline for…

Home Instead have been a lifeline for us. I honestly don’t know what we would have done without them. In addition to the care they already provided we replaced the free ‘care’ provided after mum broke her hip with Home Instead as their carers are all wonderful, compassionate and efficient. The communication has been first class. Sandy and Vicky have been really helpful and Tina, Janet, Maxine, Theresa and Tracy are all lovely carers.

Home Instead has been a crucial support…

Home Instead Cambridge has been a crucial support for my mother for over a year. Despite living away, their excellent communication and the app provide me with a daily update on the caregivers' activities. After a disappointing experience with a previous provider, Home Instead has not only met but exceeded our expectations, restoring my faith in home care. We trust that, in the long term, Home Instead will continue to meet my mother's evolving needs, whether it's multiple daily visits or transitioning to live-in care.
