Mint Mobile's unlimited scam (unlimited for a spell, then get ready for 0.04mbps mobile data)
Mint Mobile's unlimited high speed data offer is a scam. They offer unlimited talk, text, and high speed mobile data, but they make a concerted effort to barely inform you of a 40 gig cap on the high speed data. If you do not have home internet, or in my case simply did not connect your device to the wifi as the advent of unlimited mobile data offerings from ALL carriers gave me as it turns out a false sense of security. That 40 gigs of data will get you about 10-15 days of normal use, then without warning your mobile internet becomes bricked. Litterly you cannot load any URL, and all app internet functionality is gone, you can't even use the Mint Mobile app for support. Mint Mobile's terms of service state when data cap is realized your mobile data queries will lose priority over all others during times of network congestion, but the data throttling they unleash on you will last for hours in duration, with longer periods over night, at 3-4-5AM, in my small town. There is no way their network is congested at 4AM. They offer high speed data boosts, $10 for 5gb, and $20 for 10gb, and while you are pondering on and realizing what a bad deal that is for you as even the 10gb won't get you through until the monthly resetting of the cap, just then they offer you a previously not mentioned "Unnecessary Plan" with a 60gb high speed data cap, only this is a line change and the $15 a month initial enrollment deal that even brought you to Mint Mobile in the first place no longer applies. You are also well beyond their guaranteed 7 days no questions asked return and refund policy, so despite the 3 month premium you just paid 14 days prior, you now must pay 3 months of the $60 per month premium in order to even start the new 60 gb high speed data capped plan, so that means you're out $225 within the first 2 weeks for a functional modern cell phone. Mint mobile sucks you in with a great price on an Unlimited Data Plan, and bait and switches ya with a low high speed mobile data cap, gives you litterly no bandwith in which to even remotely use mobile internet data upon reaching that cap, and then demands way more money to restore functionality. Pretty good scheme in all honesty, any fines ever imposed for such wanton money bilking and conniving thievery will pale in comparison to the profits such large-scale skulduggery can generate.
☆☆UPDATE☆☆ I have now seen my mobile data throttled to the point that without wifi I can only make calls and send text messages. Any and all mobile data functionality is gone, and I have learned Mint Mobile's terms of service is a bunch of lies. After chatting with an employee I come to find out that losing priority for your mobile data queries during times of network congestion is supplemental to being throttled down to 512 kbps or 2G. Well, I have been doing speed tests when I can actually get them to work and the top speed I have seen is 0.29mbps, or 112kbps. The average I have been getting is 0.04 mbps or 40 kbps. 40kbps is cartoonishly slow, I used to get 52 kbps on the Earthlink dial-up free trial about 20 years ago. I cannot fathom how Mint Mobile is getting away with this blatant ripoff "unlimited" plan that is NOT unlimited. I think I'm at the file a complaint with the Federal Trade Commision, and the PA Attorney General's Bureau Of Consumer Protection point in this journey, and I will be porting my number to another carrier ASAP. Before you leave your existing carrier from being enticed by Mint Mobiles promises to provide comparable service for a bargain price, know that they are full of it. They offer comparable service as long as you keep ponying up money, and you will be very disappointed in the end.
