Review summary

Mater Private Hospital receives a mixed response from its patients, with a significant number expressing dissatisfaction. While some reviewers commend the staff for their helpfulness and calming demeanor, particularly in urgent situations, many others report severe delays and poor treatment. Complaints about long wait times, with patients waiting over nine hours to be seen, are prevalent, raising concerns about the efficiency of the hospital's operations. Additionally, several individuals express disappointment with the quality of care, citing dismissive attitudes from doctors and inadequate responses to pain. Although a few patients share positive experiences, particularly in oncology and day procedures, the overall sentiment leans heavily towards frustration and dissatisfaction.

Mater Private Health Check 😒

It was the first time to use The Mater Private for a healthcheck. I usually go to The Beacon Clinic but sadly they were booked up. Now, I know why!! My previous experiences in The Beacon Clinic have been effortless and the attention to detail during the medical check up was excellent. Unfortunately, I cannot say the same for The Mater Private, Cherrywood. Results were promised within 10 working days. I telephoned at the end of last week and was promised a response but none came. Today is the fourteenth working day and nothing has been received. I finally emailed an hour ago and got an apology for the delay. It shouldn't have taken an email from me to get a response from them! I wish I'd been able to book an appointment with The Beacon Hospital instead.

Outstanding Service

There was some mixup with an appointment for a Cardioversion. After several phone calls the issue was sorted by Lorraine Emmett who just took personal responsibility and went to alot of trouble to arrange an appointment at an appropriate time Thank you so much

The worst patient experience possible…

I recently went here for a scan recommended by my GP. Needed it done urgently. The people who take payments from patients sit right inside the door of the hospital so the first action is to pay. My insurance was charged €500 for the scan. However, despite many many calls to get the results, I could not get any response. There is a complete lack of understanding patient focus at the Mater Private. It is simply appalling. I eventually had no choice but to advise the hospital that I would contact the national Press if they didn’t respond - and the my responded within a couple of hours. So, based in my experience, I would never go to the Mater Private again and couldn’t possibly recommend them. It was the worst customer experience I’ve encountered in a long time. Never again.

Paid 650 for a health check for my wife…

Paid 650 for a health check for my wife and it was finished inside 50 minutes. She was left with a bruised and swollen arm from the blood sample taken. In general we felt that the whole experience was rushed and she wasn't given the proper time and attention. In contrast we usually go to the beacon hospital but it was fully booked. At least there they spend 4 hours with you and give you a thorough check up. We'd never return to the Mater again.

Doctors differ… Patients die.

I was taken to the Mater hospital by ambulance after I had collapsed with severe leg pain on O’Connell Street two weeks ago. They took my blood pressure and did a series of blood tests. After a 3-4 hour wait, I was given the information that the blood test results came back all clear. So despite the fact that I physically couldn’t walk more than 20-30 steps they were happy to send me home. I persisted that something wasn’t right. They then gave me an appointment for an ultrasound to be done 3 days later. I honestly felt that this was just to fob me off… Anyway, home I went. The following morning I was taken into Tallaght Hospital, I was immediately diagnosed with multiple blood clots in my leg and operated on within a few hours. I’m lucky to be here to tell my story, I wonder how many people that were sent home without a correct diagnosis aren’t. Doctors differ… Patients die.

I simply cannot contact this hospital…

I simply cannot contact this hospital by phone for over 3 weeks - their voicemail gives an email address for us elderly patients - yet again undelivered. Then went to their web page for contact email details - guess what - doesn't work either. Absolutely scandalous that its is now over a month and they never answer their phones, emails that are totally useless as they are undelivered. On top of all that I was discharged with a MRA infection as a direct result of my surgery - never again !!!!!!

Had to go to Mater private in Dublin…procedure.

Had to go to Mater private in Dublin last Wednesday 23rd Nov from Limerick, my appointment was for 11am for my procedure, however this was not carried out until 3pm, there was also to be a follow up telephone call the following day which never happened, however I have to say that the nurses and doctors could not be nicer, it's a pity about the admin side of the hospital, which I was told on the day was the cause for the delay.

Rude staff

Horrendous woman on the public hospital information desk, asked her politely for directions to the private hospital to be snapped at and told she was “sick of giving directions all day” - even though she was working at a desk clearly marked INFORMATION, and I would assume helping people is part of her job. Terrible choice of person to have welcome you in or help you should you need anything in a huge hospital which is very poorly laid out.

NEVER AGAIN! Surgery on 7th April went well but this…

Surgery on 7th April went well but this place has no customer service ethic. I was admitted at 8am. I Sat in a corridor until I said I was going home at 3. 30. I was then taken to a 4 bed ward and had surgery about 6pm. I tested positive on 8th and 9th for Covid but no one told me. I was sent home with it on 11th and encouraged to stop for lunch en route. Later I got a text to say I was positive after blowing out candles on a birthday cake And sharing it when I got home. While a patient no toilet paper was provided for a whole day and it was difficult to get a jug of water. I could go on and on. My review direct to the Mater Private was not acknowledged. This cost me a lot of money!!

Absolutely terrible patient care

My daughter has had bowel problems and we decided to go private to get the best advice and sort this out once and for all.We waited months for a colonoscopy and endoscopy and after 5 weeks still no word, after multiple phone messages (they don't answer the phone) from us and our GP still no word. A colleagues child got a consultation the same day as her colonoscopy in the General in Tralee recently. We have just been admitted to the Bons Secours for the same procedures with hopefully with answers.

I am going to write a reactive review…

I am going to write a reactive review from 2015/2016. My experience was with Dr Carney. Who I felt is one of the most arrogant person imaginable. I was a mild 35 year old with my dad on his deathbed. He had no compassion, no understanding. Everyone around me would say but his child had a disability so probably bringing his tempter to work. No excuse!. When I entered his office from a flight from the UK, I had some questions and hopeful solutions, but once I opened my mouth, All I could hear from Dr Carey was "who is this that graces my carpet". I mean really what era are we working in? Don't get me wrong my dad was difficult and probably knew more than Doctors as he was a senior vet (both biological fields). My dad chose Dr Carney on the basis that his cousin (Dr Naughton) was a senior doctor and recommend him as very good. Dr Carney maybe very good but absolutely terrible at talking to people which if front line is as important as being a good doctor. I do wonder if anyone else had similar issue with Dr Carney as I would like him struck off! I can't imagine that my dad got up the nose of Dr Carney that this was an isolated case.

My stomach is unable to process most…

My stomach is unable to process most foods on this earth. I get severe nausea and bad headaches in relation to foods. This was proven at the Beaumont migraine clinic. Waited many months to be contacted by a Mater Gastroenterologist. I get a call in August. It’s a junior doctor. He asks loads of questions. Then he says he will book me in for gastroscopy and dietician in November. I get a letter. It advises A delay. Anyway the gastroscopy is eventually completed. I am to see a gastroenterologist as a follow up and feedback. He asks all the same questions again. Then he says the results are negative. He also says the results of a much earlier endoscope investigation of my lower bowel were also negative, so there is nothing they can do. It’s like thank you and goodbye. i reply that there is definitely something wrong with my digestion because some problem between my stomach and large intestine is poisoning my body. He calls the senior gastroenterologist. They come back and I get the same story. Basically I am blocked. They refused to check further. i asked what about food samples from my gut. What about stool tests. Could they work with other specialists? They said they had completed their work which was check my gastro intestinal tract end to end with a camera. No more. In the end they told me there was nothing more they could do and I need to go back to my GP. Whatever happened to doctors and specialist who work together to IDENTIFY AND RESOLVE a problem. Sorry but the quality of the gastro department at Mater is unbelievably low. I am not mentioning names just the unit and the hospital. I really feel the department functions like a bunch of medical camera operators who have no wider knowledge or the will to discover the underlying problem. I waited one year and I am no better. In fact if this progresses further I will have to live on a drip! But they do not care!

Slow and Inefficient

The short version The hospital is slow, expensive, and inefficient. The Kafkaesque 1- I made an appointment made through a third-party app, which is set and implemented by either you directly as a company or your staff, so definitely that's not an excuse for delay. I didn't come in begging for a last-minute appointment, I picked a 5 pm appointment, one out of several time slots available on that date. 2- On the app there's no clear reference to the fact that the appointment would have been in a hospital, which is always a slow and burdensome process compared to a private studio and having known in advance, I would have probably avoided it. 3- On the app the price was advertised at €90, while I was charged €139. 4- The next day I get notified via mail that I received texts from the doctor over the app which is downloadable only through an Italian app store, which I cannot access, so I have no idea what the doctor is trying to communicate... There's no phone number, no e-mail on the app, and looking up the doctor, nothing still... 5- I finally receive a call from the hospital which has both my email and phone number to confirm my appointment at 19:00. I then double-check, whether I made a mistake, but the appointment was definitely booked at 17:00, as confirmed via mail, which I communicate to the attendant. 6- The hospital calls me back one more time, confirming the appointment at 16:45. I ask indications on where to park, as these are big structures, and I get told, "Just come around and we'll tell you." 7- At 16:15 I get to the hospital, follow google maps diligently and find myself stuck at the back, at the first aid entrance, so I go back one km or so, turn around and get to the front entrance. (You might want to fix your location on Google Maps) 7- I finally get in, now, one queue after the other, filling in the same information over and over again, get charged well above advertised price, and then being told I should have shown up 1 HOUR IN ADVANCE!! (Yes, because that's how slow their admission is, I would have appreciated having known that before, along with the parking info thanks). 8- I finally get to the right section of the hospital, it's now 17:00, I think I'm late, having spent half an hour in admission (Where there were maybe 12 people waiting and 12 "working" -_- ) I get asked for my name, which... Is not on the list... 9- The nurses figure I must have been switched with someone else, and my appointment is... At 17:00... 10- It's 17:45 when I finally head downstairs to get a refund. 11- Where I wait in line for another 10 minutes, while a few people in admission go in before me, because apparently if you get a refund you can get 3 numbers over the next one in line, because who cares... 12- Finally the clerk calls the number before mine, there's nobody, apart from me (as the number still has to be issued), asks me my number, and with a confused look on his face, ( I arrived before the other 3 people who got served before me), asks me to go to the counter. 13- I get my money back, I go home THE END...
