Level 3 - 5 Integrative Counselling Training
As a contractor, I could never guarantee where I would be working from week to week or what hours, so the thought of investing a considerable amount of money into an evening class worried me. I also often saw courses getting pulled from the curriculum of my local colleges if they did not have enough people subscribe so 1 level may be available but the next would not be. Chrysalis, however, provide their training on weekends. Instead of a weekly commitment of an evening class, this could be consolidated down into a single day once a month. As their training takes you through from level 3 all the way up to the completion of level 5 I could be confident that I wouldn't need to be looking for an alternative provider or dealing with last-minute cancellations due to low course numbers.
The course is integrative, which means that it looks at many different therapeutic models which I love. At the start of my journey in retraining to be a counsellor, I did not know what approach I would feel best suited to. However, by learning about several different models, I can now work in a way that is best suited to my clients which can prevent them from feeling "stuck". This does require a lot of hard work outside of classes through further reading and self-development but allows you to focus your efforts on areas that you want to specialise in if you so wish.
My fellow peers on the course are very supportive. It is a long and hard journey and you will have wobbles of confidence or time constraints along the way. However, the friends I have made on the course have been amazing at keeping my spirits high and just keeping going. We have shared lots of resources within the group for useful reading, podcasts, courses, TV and film.
As for the tutor, Leigh, we couldn't have asked for better. She takes the time to write detailed feedback against every piece of work submitted so you know your areas of strength and weaknesses. She regularly observes practical work in class and in a way that we don't feel intimidated by. Again offering feedback each time. She facilitates lots of healthy debates and discussions, making sure everyone has the opportunity to have their say. And I have learned so much from her knowledge and experience in the field.
