Having had to postpone our wedding from 2020 to 2021 my partner and I wanted to spend a little extra to make our day the best possible. What better way than a band?
Conga Revolution and their manager Amanda from Jack Entertainment seemed to fit the bill. Overly responsive and polite they seemed like the perfect people to support us during such a stressful period of our lives: how wrong we were.
Once Jack Entertainment has your deposit they are quite hostile. Our 2021 wedding was met with many COVID restrictions - venue managers had complete autonomy over what was deemed safe and unsafe with pages long risk assessments. Our venue, in inner city London in a residential area, deemed having a band as unsafe and we were told frankly that it would not be possible to have a band. This created a ‘frustrated contract’ which meant legally we were entitled to get our money back. Amanda and the band refused demanding full payment claiming it was our venue’s fault rather than a pandemic. Our wedding planner suggested an alternative date which the band accepted as a ‘gesture of good will’. It would seem they disregarded that COVID and not us meant they could not perform.
Our new date was scheduled for the 15th January 2022. However, we found out we were expecting and would be 6 months pregnant by this time - deemed by the NHS as clinically vulnerable if I contracted COVID. I’m sure you can appreciate my apprehension at being in a small enclosed space with a lot of people and a band. Rather than risk mine or my unborn child’s life, we looked at our contract which stated if given 3 months’ notice we should be able to receive 50% of the £1500 we paid. That seemed fair to us, so we informed them that our circumstances had changed and asked if it would be possible to have our money refunded if the party was not to be going ahead.
Now this is where Amanda turned nasty.
They manipulated our words proclaiming we had cancelled the band rather than enquired about a refund should we have to cancel. They didn’t inform us that this email (as they saw it) meant we were cancelling. They said we had messed them around and so had taken on other work for the date we had booked. In their response to us they only said the refund would be unavailable as it was a ‘good will gesture’. So despite knowing I might endanger myself with COVID I found a venue where we could socially distance, as we did not want to lose hundreds of pounds on top of what we had lost due to our delayed wedding. I mentioned we had found a venue but after ignoring our emails and phone calls for several weeks they again refused to engage with us. Instead they have taken our £1500 and performed 0 songs. You can imagine the stress, frustration and anger at paying for a service it feels like they never wanted to provide.
COVID has been hard on everyone, we can appreciate that but go with a band who doesn’t just want your money, who have a manager who isn’t manipulative and will twist your very clear questions into statements of lies.
Stay clear and choose a band who will work with you and not against you
