The 2026 Shopping & Fashion report
Online shopping is the category where buyer trust is now established or destroyed during the return process. A product that fits, arrives on time, and matches its photo is now table stakes; what separates the operators at the top of the 2026 ranking from the bottom is what happens when the product does not. Free returns are no longer an indulgence — they are the dividing line between retailers that retain customers and retailers that watch them go to a competitor with one click.
CrowdTrust's 2026 rankings weight reviews that describe returns, exchanges, sizing exchanges, and order-issue resolution more heavily than reviews of routine purchases. This reflects how buyers actually evaluate retailers: the day-to-day product browsing experience matters, but loyalty is determined by the one time something went wrong. Across clothing, shoes, jewelry, department stores, online marketplaces, and discount retailers, the operators who treated returns as a customer-service moment rather than a cost centre consistently dominated their sub-categories.
The dominant 2026 shift was the retreat from "free everything" pricing models. As shipping, returns, and reverse logistics costs rose, even category-leading retailers introduced restocking fees, return shipping charges, or restricted return windows on sale items. Buyers tolerated these changes when they were disclosed prominently at checkout. They punished retailers, sometimes brutally, when the policy changed after purchase or was buried in fine print.
