Review summary

Mayo Clinic receives overwhelmingly negative feedback from consumers, with many expressing dissatisfaction regarding appointment management and staff attitudes. A significant number of reviewers report last-minute cancellations and poor communication, leading to frustration and a sense of being undervalued as patients. While some individuals commend the expertise of specific doctors and the quality of care received, these positive experiences are overshadowed by complaints about the clinic's perceived prioritization of profit over patient care. Many customers also criticize the clinic for its limited acceptance of insurance plans, which adds to the feeling of exclusion. Overall, the sentiment is predominantly negative, with a mere 10% of reviews reflecting a positive experience.

Molested by a possible fake doctor at Mayo Clinic Jacksonville

If people are wondering why some reviews for Dr. Pedro Malavet are good and some are bad - it is because the good reviews are from male patients. Pedro Malavet (I will not call him a doctor) HATES women. I was another unfortunate female patient victim of his. I was there for eye and lung problems since childhood, and I had those medical records with me that my doctors gave me to bring. He treated me like he was a veterinarian, and I was a stray dog. I showed him my medical records. He said “hmph”, gave them back to me, then lied in the medical records and said no medical history for ophthalmology and pulmonary among other things. He kept asking instead if I had muscle problems and seemed fixated on that. I kept telling him NO, and re-iterated the eye and lung problems I was there for. I requested my medical records of him afterwards, and lo and behold, he wrote “the patient’s primary concern is muscle pain which cannot be explained.” He lied. This guy is not smart enough to be a real doctor. His bio supposedly says he went to medical school in Puerto Rico. But Pedro Malavet is a common name there, like John Smith here, so he is probably using someone else’s medical diploma. Then back to my clinic visit, randomly in the middle of the appointment, he said it’s time to do a little neurological test. He told me to stand in the middle of the room on one leg like a crane. It was taking forever and it was hard for me to balance. Then he walked over and shoved me really hard and hurt me. That was his special neurological test. Then after that he told me to lie down on the exam table, and there was no chaperone in the room. Then he started hyperventilating and panting, and yanked my pants and underpants down by surprise, and put his face in my lower private area and just kept it there. This is the most traumatizing thing that has happened to me in my adult life. I have had nightmares from this trauma for years. MAYO CLINIC – get your act together and investigate this guy! Also, he ordered tests and physical therapy (?) and things that were not related to any of my complaints or medical issues, just to run up my bill since insurance would cover it. I did not go to those tests and appointments, because that would have been dishonest. So he is involved in insurance fraud too.

Disappointed and disoriented after months of transparent collaboration

We contacted Mayo Clinic with hope and trust, looking for a possible treatment for my father, who suffers from a complex coronary condition considered "inoperable" in Italy. From the very beginning, we made it clear that - living in Europe - we would only be able to travel to the U.S. if a surgical or interventional possibility could be confirmed after reviewing the medical records. We were told that a review would be carried out and were even asked to provide additional testing, including a new angiography - which we did entirely upon Mayo Clinic’s request. We submitted everything: translated reports, DICOM files, clinical summaries, and filled out every form carefully. After months of effort, back-and-forth emails, and respectful communication, we were finally told that no possible treatment direction can be discussed unless we come in person, which completely contradicts what we had been told at the outset. To make matters worse, we were informed that the person who had been following our case from the beginning no longer works there, and that we should now simply "decide" whether to come - without any indication or reassurance, despite having provided everything required. This approach may work for local patients who live a few hours away. But for a fragile international patient, expected to travel across the ocean without a single preliminary indication, it is not only impractical ...it is deeply dehumanizing. The disappointment is not just medical. It is human. I write this in the hope that Mayo Clinic will consider not only the excellence of its clinical services, but also the importance of clarity, consistency, and empathy - especially when working with international patients who are already navigating pain, risk, and hope from afar.

Incompetent staff

I originally called to book an appointment and was told the person I needed to speak to was busy and that I would get a call back. Never did. I called back and confirmed appointment booking and was told would receive email before appointment with forms to fill out. 2 weeks pass and no email received so called to chase this email and no one was available but a message was taken by someone and I provided my email address again. Told them I was in meetings all afternoon. Got a call during meetings which I assume was from them but no message left to give me any update. Called a day or 2 later on day of my appointment to chase again and was told I didn't exist in their systems and have no appointment. Now the next appointment is 5 weeks away. I got the feeling from the start they would be a nightmare to deal with. Finding another consultant

MAYO DOES NOT TAKE PATIENTS

During open season, Blue Cross sent mailings touting the fact that Mayo now accepts BCBS. They made a big deal out of this, and based on Mayo verifying to me that they do accept Medicare and BCBS as a secondary, I signed up. I was genuinely excited about going to Mayo, as their reputation is pretty good. Imagine my surprise when I found out from Mayo that they aren't accepting any new patients, don't do wait lists, and have no plans of accepting any new patients in the foreseeable future. They said they haven't been accepting new patients in over a year. Interestingly, I was a patient of Mayo in the past, and so, was not considered a new patient. I feel betrayed, both by BCBS, as well as by Mayo. They all knew that there was no way to get in to Mayo, but presented it as a great benefit of these insurance policies. How does a medical facility completely stop taking patients, won't allow wait lists, and yet contract with a major insurance provider? Not to sound crass, but people die, move away, etc. Yet Mayo never takes new patients? Something more is going on here, and someone needs to investigate why BCBS would contract with a major provider that won't even take their subscribers. They should have known this, and should have never represented to the public that they could go to the Mayo Clinic. Insurers need to stop doing business with Mayo if there is no chance of their subscribers actually going there.

The Mayo Clinic is a joke!

The Mayo Clinic is a joke!! They made us fill out a form and waste time for a call only to tell us they don't take our insurance. They were given our insurance info up front and knew it prior to and still made us wait. They said it was a $5000 out of pocket expense to begin the process with them and no cap for expenses. There was no talk of if or how they could help us, just what money we had. They should be ashamed and for the middle and lower class you are nothing to them. Our society is in a downward spiral and May Clinic is adding to the demise of life!!

Horrible experience

Horrible experience. Traveled at great expense to get care here. Saw one physician for 45 minutes. Even more disturbing is they will not give any information on escalating care concerns besides a low level admin in the office of patient experience. Not at all comprehensive, interdisciplinary or patient focused- more of a bait and switch experience.

I opted for a new prostate cancer…

I opted for a new prostate cancer treatment. I was placed in the cotrol group. I texted my practice that I wanted to switch to proton ( from photon ) treatment. The practitioner assured me that he would take care of that. He didn’t. I had my first treatment with the old photon treatment. Didn’t find out that my requested change of treatment had been ignored until two days later when I met with a doctor for my follow up. I looked in my portal and those texts were not there. I had my practitioner daughter as a having access to my portal. She just advised me that she was unable to access my portal.

Do Not Trust Them

I was deceived by a Dr. Valencia . He told me the ulcer on my tongue was going to turn into cancer. He then told me if he did not cut it off right away it that I would end up having to have my jaw removed. Like a fool I believed him and let him mutilate me. After the botched surgery he no longer wanted to deal with his mistakes and forced me to go back to work while still on pain meds and unable to talk. My tongue swelled up like a bullfrog. When I complained and sent photos to them online they did not want to deal with me. He was forced to write a a work excuse and I asked to be referred to the Mayo Clinic in Rochester. There the much more qualified ENT doctors admitted to me that it was not cancer and then they towed the company line. They told me they did not want to even touch what Valencia did to me in fear they would only make it worse. I asked why I wasn't referred to them before Valencia was allowed to cut on me and they had no answer. I am in pain and suffer everyday due to this unnecessary surgery. Please get several opinions before letting them do the same thing to you. They do pay google to delete negative reviews so I do not know how long this will be up.

GARBAGE HOSPITAL

My husband suffers from chronic hiccups, and I mean 24/7/365 hiccups. He can hardly sleep, throws up, chokes, stops breathing, and his chest hurts constantly bc of them. The Mayo Clinic in Rochester is the only place in the country who does a procedure to stop the hiccups. We had at least 8 doctors send letters to Mayo telling them this is a quality of life issue and potentially fatal bc of him stopping breathing. We applied twice and also sent an appeal letter after the 2d denial. Bc Michael has Medicare as his primary insurance (he also has federal BC/BS), they denied him. It's not like they wouldn't get their money w/2 insurances. The Mayo Clinic in Rochester is GARBAGE! Picking and choosing who they'll help based on money and insurance is nothing but pure GREED! Trust me, this hospital cares nothing about their patients, only the dollars a patient can provide!

Oliver Tobin should lose his license.

Travelled to Rochester to get to the bottom of a "chest mass" found on a recent MRI. After arranging for the 2 week stay at Mayo I went in for the initial appointment and saw Oliver Tobin. During the initial appointment he asked what brought me in, and I told him about the chest mass. He immediately told me "it's nothing, similar to a vericose vein". This was a shocking relief for me and I was ecstatic that I wouldn't need surgery. After being told that I didn't have a tumor, all other appointments were cancelled, I had an appointment with a thoracic surgeon and an MRI for the next day that were cancelled. After the two weeks of bumming around Rochester with nothing to do, I went to the follow up appointment the day before I was to fly back to Anchorage. At this appointment I asked Oliver what I should say to my neurologist at home that misdiagnosed this chest mass, at this point he looked at the MRI for the first time and discovered that I did have a mass that was clearly visible on MRI and written about in the accompanying report. I went home the next day after wasting thousands of dollars on flights, rental car, and hotel. The fact that Oliver Tobin didn't even glance at any medical records I brought him seemed grossly negligent to me. I called Mayo clinic patient relations trying to get some reimbursement for the expenses for this utterly useless and frustrating trip and was denied anything because Oliver lied to them about the reason for my appointment in the first place. I wouldn't recommend the mayo clinic for anything at this point. Also, Oliver Tobin should not be trusted to see ANY patients period! With the kind of negligent, and utterly lazy performance he should be stripped of his license.

STAY AS FAR AWAR FROM THIS PROVIDER AS…

STAY AS FAR AWAR FROM THIS PROVIDER AS POSSIBLE ! DENIED surgery consult and any form of health care because I was in a car accident even though Mayo accepts my personal health insurance and I am able to pay cash for the difference / or copay. Mayo does not need to be involved with 3rd party payor at all, ever for anything. No one who is willing to pay cash should be denied health care in this country just because of some non relevant B.S. insurance company.

Demanded $5000.00 up front before I could make any appointments

I have nothing to say about their services since for obvious reasons I did not make use of them. Preliminary phone call involved a conversation wherein they revealed my lack of insurance (between employer at the moment, looking to see someone about my attention deficit since that was one reason I resigned from said employer and want help to cope with the issues that arise when I do secure my next job) would require me to, in so many words, provide them with a down payment of $5000.00 before they would consider setting up any appointments. We haven't even established whether they can recommend any good doctors or therapists for my situation but they already want a bigger commitment from me than my last security deposit on an apartment. And clearly they don't have any good mental health professionals to recommend since if they had such resources at their disposal someone would tell them that the asking price is complete insanity. Obviously the hope is that they would be getting that money from your insurance company, but who they are trying to bleed dry hardly makes up for it the fact their business is designed to siphon a patient's money before even considering providing any sort of benefit. Do not do business with these people.

Mayo Clinic drs lie

I went to Mayo Clinic in January 2024. The convinced me to get admitted to the hospital for diagnosis while we were reeling from the terrible diagnosis of cancer, they proceeded to lie to me about all of my choices and options and with the outcomes, . They told me I broke bones when I needed surgeries that were unnecessary and proceeded to destroy my mobility inside of two surgeries that were unnecessary. They knew due to my diagnosis that I may never heal properly, and never once mentioned that to me before the surgeries were performed . It’s been 10 months and I’ve never healed. I still can’t walk or live normally. This hospital and its doctors are truly terrible. If you value your heath stay far away.

I visited the Mayo Clinic in Rochester

I visited the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN in July because of a recurrent issue I was having with my back, hip, head and legs. I just wanted to get a second opinion because the doctors I had, I live 2 hours from the clinic, just didn't know what was happening. I had an MRI, CAT and X-ray but all they could find was a small bulge in my spine. They ordered therapy, medicine and shots in my spine. None have effectively worked. I called to make an appointment to the Mayo clinic because I felt there was more issues going on. When I arrived there, the doctors and nurses were extremely professional and seemed to care about my well-being. I had just about every test known to man, or close to it, and got some more informative answers. They didn't come off as condescending but compassionate and caring. I thought I would stay for a day or so, because they found other issues that I needed to have 4-5 more tests. I honestly feel more comfortable with the doctors and nurses there. World class clinic that lives up to their reputation.
