Denial of responsibility
I hired a car in Madeira through Carrentals.co.uk. Great deal with Avis supposedly. However I was then the victim of a common car hire scam; on arrival the Avis clerk loaded my contract with "extras" already included in my Carrentals voucher. I received no paper contract (signed a screen), and was not informed that i had bought these unnecessary items until I was back in UK. I complained to Carrentals who informed me it was not their problem, although they brokered the deal. They flatly denied any responsibility, were not even prepared to "lean" on Avis, with whom they must presumably do substantial business. The true measure of a good service business is whether they deliver when things don't work and Carrentals singularly failed on this count. DON'T TOUCH THEM!

Car not booked.
Arrived at airport, no car, Sixt had not received booking from Carrentals. Sixt photo copied my docs and provided me with a car an hour later and said they would contact Carrentals. I assume Sixt were successful as my credit card block has been removed without deduction. Thank you Sixt.

Excellent experience but can still improve
I would give 5 stars if the following were made even more clear to the customer before finalising the contract: 1. True distance from airport terminal (ie time to reach the location where the car is located) 2. Actual insurance coverage which can be purchased as an option (for one rental, it was a case of just lowering the excess by quite a small margin, not really worth it) 3. Making it explicit (for rentals where one does NOT filter on “unlimited mileage “) what the daily km allowed is, and how much extra one will typically pay per km above that threshold.
