As with any guided tour experience, there will be ups and downs. Having returned from the Japan tour, the Travel Department offers Japan is an unbelievable country full of culture, friendly people, and gorgeous food for the most part. I already have a deep longing to head back there.
How did I find the tour itself? There were ups and downs, but thankfully, the negatives weren't enough to affect my enjoyment of Japan. Our first guide was excellent and went above and beyond to ensure everyone had a fantastic experience. Sadly, the second guide wasn't quite as good and lacked the helpfulness we experienced in the first part of the tour. She was also quite challenging to follow in parts, though the language barrier was presumably a factor here.
I would have changed the itinerary around a bit as well. Maybe we could have a rest day in Hakone and then go to Tokyo. Kamakura was beautiful, but the Tokyo rush hour traffic was a point of contention that seemed to frustrate fellow passengers, and we probably could have skipped it. The abundance of temples was also a bit much. There were undoubtedly some stunning ones, but it also felt repetitive. It could have also been a guide issue, as they failed to convey what made each temple unique to Japanese culture.
My last grumbling, and I'll move onto the positives, is that I felt there could have been more of an awareness from the guide that not everyone has to participate in every activity. The flower arranging is a good example of a situation where one or two people probably weren't comfortable participating in the exercise but did so anyway. A throwaway comment from the staff member saying the bouquet looks damaged probably didn't help either.
All that aside, it was a very well-organised trip. Accommodation was first class, the meals included were mostly excellent and out of the various Travel Department trips I've been on it was the best group.
