Midnight In The Garden Of Good And Evil Musical Reviews

The production values are absolutely top-notch with incredible period costumes and atmospheric lighting. However, the musical struggles to find its footing between being a murder mystery and a character study. The second act dragged considerably, and several plot threads felt unresolved. Great performances couldn't quite save the uneven pacing.

Expected more based on all the hype. The singing was excellent and the story interesting, but something felt off about the adaptation. Maybe it's just hard to translate such a complex book to the stage. The murder mystery elements worked better than the social commentary parts.

From the opening number to the final bow, this production held me spellbound. The way they handled the complex themes of sexuality, class, and justice in 1980s Georgia was both sensitive and bold. The ensemble cast created a living, breathing Savannah that felt authentic and lived-in. This is musical theater at its finest.

There's a lot to admire here - gorgeous period details, strong vocal performances, and moments of genuine theatrical magic. The first act builds tension beautifully, but the second act loses some momentum. Despite its flaws, the production has a unique voice and tackles challenging themes with intelligence.

While the cast clearly gave their all, the musical itself feels unfocused and overly long. The famous characters from the book don't translate well to song, and the pacing issues make it hard to stay engaged. Beautiful set design can't make up for a weak book.

This musical adaptation truly captures the essence of Berendt's beloved novel. The atmospheric staging and haunting melodies transported me straight to Savannah's mysterious squares. The cast delivered powerful performances, particularly the actor portraying Jim Williams. While the pacing felt slightly rushed in the second act, the overall production was mesmerizing and stayed true to the source material's dark charm.

The performances are committed and the story fascinating, even if the musical structure isn't always smooth. Some brilliant moments scattered throughout.

Never read the book but this musical made me want to immediately. The blend of mystery, humor, and Southern Gothic atmosphere was perfect. Every song felt necessary to the story.

Gorgeous costumes and set design that really brought 1980s Savannah to life. The songs were memorable and the story compelling, though at nearly three hours it felt a bit drawn out. Some scenes could have been tightened up.

Solid performances across the board and beautiful staging. The source material is fascinating but the musical adaptation feels somewhat sanitized compared to the book's grittier elements. Still an enjoyable evening at the theater, just not as impactful as I'd hoped.

This musical succeeds in creating the same spell that made the book so compelling. The mystery unfolds at just the right pace, and the songs enhance rather than interrupt the storytelling. The final scene gave me chills. Highly recommend for anyone who loves atmospheric theater.

The creative team did an excellent job capturing the languid, mysterious atmosphere of Savannah. The musical numbers flow naturally from the dialogue, and the cast has wonderful chemistry. A few songs felt unnecessary, but overall this is a strong adaptation that honors the source material while standing on its own as theater.
