Review summary

Pimsleur Language Programs receives overwhelmingly negative feedback, with many reviewers expressing frustration over customer service and billing practices. Consumers frequently report difficulties in canceling subscriptions, often feeling trapped by automatic renewals and deceptive promotional offers. Several users describe experiences where they were charged despite attempting to cancel during free trials, leading to accusations of manipulative selling tactics. While a few customers praise the lessons as effective tools for language acquisition, these positive remarks are overshadowed by complaints about poor product quality and lack of basic content in beginner courses. Overall, the sentiment is predominantly negative, with many urging potential users to avoid the service due to its problematic practices.

Beginner lessons not having basic phrases or words

I took the Swahili (beginner) course. I've reached lesson 13 and there was no mention of how to say basic phrases like "what's your name?" and "where are you from?". Very absurd.

NEVER USE THE PIMSLEUR SERVICE through…

NEVER USE THE PIMSLEUR SERVICE through their APP! They will cheat you. If I could give them zero stars I would. What a scam. Their app automatically renews (charges you) WITHOUT your permission. When I tried to cancel, the app does not allow cancellation. So I had to call and cancel by phone in February. They said it was cancelled, but kept charging me anyway. $45 later, I call a second time to complain, and they pretend they did not receive my first call! You can do better with any other language service.

better to buy the lessons, rather than subscribe

I like being able to practice out loud, and repeat lessons as many times as I need to. I first tried the monthly subscription, which didn't work for me, because I could only play the lessons at normal speed. For people over 50, we need more time to process information. instead, I bought the lessons as an audiobook, rather than subscribing to the monthly course, I was able to slow down the audio to 75% speed, which is much better for learning. The monthly course is expensive, so the company should add a feature to the app for longer pauses. but ... now that I have purchased the lessons, I can learn at a better pace for me, and I really like the program. (the 'date of experience' is ongoing. I've been using the program for over a month.

Scam Don't Buy

I really don't know if the program works. Can not access it. I have spent almost 200.00 with them and countless hours on the phone and emails. When you do get someone on the phone it is very hard to understand them. (They should use the product they are selling.) I think this is by design just to frustrate people so they just go away. If you want to waste money go ahead and buy.

Pimsleur is nothing but a thief

Pimsleur is nothing but a thief. I cancelled the free 7-day trial before 7 days. They charged my debit card. Then they have a 30 day money back guarantee, when you try to use it, they refuse to refund your money. They keep trying to offer you another 28 days, but the program is really elementary and not worth the money, so I just asked for my money back. They told me that I was still subscribed. I went to their website and got the message that they have no subscription in my name. I sent them a copy of this. The reason why the website shows no subscription in my name is because I had cancelled it approximately 3 days into the trial. They still refused to return my money. Their guarantees are lies. I am now going to dispute this through my bank and contact both state and federal consumer authorities. BEWARE DOING BUSINESS WITH PIMSLEUR.

Thieves.

Thieves. I oredered the level 1 Finnish course on Valentine's Day sale, and never got access to it. After numerous emails, they still didn't answer (and considering the other reviews I guess I just lost 100$). Their only phone contact is for US only, I live in Europe and can't call or I'll lost too much money. I don't get how those people are allowed to sell products we don't have access to.

AVOID at all costs

AVOID at all costs. Expensive, and then they cut off access to my French 3 course, for no apparent reason. Very difficult to make contact with the company to complain. The advice given does not solve the problem. And then I find they have signed me up to take a course in Albanian (free trial to start.) I do not wish to learn Albanian. Victoria Lynch

Con artists

I really like this app. I found it was helping to build my confidence for the speaking side of things. I was initially offered a seven day trial which I took. I was then offered a further 28 day trial, which again I took and when I cancelled towards the end of the free trial they offered me a further 28 days which I accepted. I was angered when I seen that they took one months subscription from me worth 18.45. I sent them an email with a screen shot of the offer and they still refused to refund me. I've had to contact PayPal to ask that they refund my money. AVOID AT ALL COSTS.

The Only Language Program I Use

I just returned from a week's vacation in Budapest. Having followed the Pimsleur Hungarian program for only 13 lessons, I was able to greet people, order food and drinks, ask simple directions, make purchases, and do some small talk. Most amazingly, my Hungarian friends told me my accent was excellent. Just think how I'd have done if I'd had time to complete the whole course! I've been using Pimsleur Language Programs for years, usually before I make an overseas trip. In addition to Hungarian, I've also learned conversational Italian, Irish Gaelic, Cantonese, Icelandic, and Dutch. I've tried other programs--forget about the useless grammar rules and isolated vocabulary. Nothing gets you up and running with useful conversation and a native accent like Pimsleur. Try it. Just trust the process. You may be able to do one lesson a day, or, like me (I'm not as young as I used to be) you may want to repeat it once or twice before moving on. It's easy, and it really enhances the travel experience.

Pimsleur supports me in my secret journey to visualize and imagine myself as someone else.

I have been studying with Pimsleur for many years. Before streaming, I bought their CDs and listened to them during morning walks. But with the $19.99 streaming monthly service, on my morning walks and in my car, I listen to how I imagine them to be, my fun two French roommates who just chat away everyday and are patient with me as I get better and better. I listen to each lesson once, then I review the sentences and vocabulary quiz, then listen to it again the next day. It's on all my devices and iphone, so it’s convenient to access, and the little games and exercises keep me sharp. I've almost completed Level 4 and am excited to start the last Level 5. The idiomatic expressions are challenging, so I print out the dialogues and tape them to my bathroom mirror and practice while I brush my teeth. I love how Pimsleur changes the way I think, and the things I think about by exposing me to another country and culture!

So-So for Beginners

From a language learning point of view, as a beginner the approach is fairly outdated, or one dimensional in comparison to other options.

They will literally steal your money.

They will literally steal your money. Saw the promotions, including the one on their own website for a 30-day money-back guarantee. Purchased the yearly subscription for approximately $165, but canceled it because didn't like it. When following up about my refund...guess what?! A generic email from someone just telling me that my subscription will not allow for a refund. This is after canceling the service and only using it for less than 15 days.

Absolutely terrible

Absolutely terrible. Bad app, worse customer service. They are worse than common thieves. They’ve stolen my money and refuse to give a refund even though I don’t want to use their app nor can I because the levels they have available are too low and there’s no way to test out of them. Stay FAR away from this app. They will steal your money and cite their slimy policies to justify it even though they are clearly misusing those policies.

I am absolutely furious with them

I am absolutely furious with them. I purchased one of their languages but my app did not give me access. I asked for help in the app and never received an answer. I emailed them (had to do it a few times) to be told to call them, using their US number. I am in EUROPE!!! It is costly to call them. I finally called them and after 7 minutes asked their rep to call me back, which she did not want to do; so I told her I would interrupt the conversation and asked her to email me when the problem was solved, and of course nothing has happened. I have paid for their product (which is probably good) and can't use it.

Inexistent customer service

The customer service is non existent. This is an online business which insist on their worldwide customer base to contact them with a US phone number. The website is a joke. Try only to logout and you will still be logged in. Try order the "Arabic" language and the basket will have the "English for Spanish speakers". Contact them using their online contact form and who knows if they'll ever respond to it.

This company is the worst..…

This company has the worst customer service I've seen in years. It was a holiday weekend, no email notice that there was an upcoming billing so I emailed them just 5 hours after they charged my card saying I did not want to proceed with their tool and to please refund. They were rude, short and obviously out to just scam me out of my $19.95 - no customer service. If you value service whatsoever you should go in any direction other than this one if you don't want to be taken advantage of.

Took money after cancellation

Even though I cancelled my subscription, Pimsleur still drew money from my account after I had already cancelled. I wrote them asking for a refund and got no response.
