Beware of rip off common area electricity prices.
I had asked Newton for their proposed new common stair electricity supply price a few weeks ago when they said they were planning to change it in July. I got a reply:- "Hope you are well. Please find the information requested below. MPAN – 1800054551256 EAC – 1,959 Unit Rate – 24.53p Standing Charge – 188.11p Just something to note, the contracts are in the Name of Newton Property for the benefit of the co-owners. As such the rates are not within the scope of the energy price cap and therefore not comparable to single domestic supplies that are protected by the price cap. If you have any questions on the matter, please let me know." _________________________________ Naturally I replied as they are putting up the standing charge to over 3 times what it currently is. They're not justifying the reason for this at all: they currently have the bill in their name:- "I was well, thank you, until I saw your proposed stair lighting electricity tender! Currently we are 59.23 pence/day standing charge and 25.886 pence per unit. I feel that there is no need to change supplier, especially as you have ironed out your company's past problems." _______________________________ My reply was sent on Friday at 1322. And no reply so I'll give a review. Our building is 4 flats. Maybe this sort of thing is standard in building factoring. Clearly there's a much smaller share to pay per owner in bigger developments, but I'm not keen on their sharp practices. It'll be really interesting to see how they try to justify this publicly. __________________________ Monday 16 June 2025. You're saying I'm a bit unreasonable to expect a prompt reply! I think it's very unreasonable that I had to deal with three instances of debt collector proceedings in respect of bills which Newton's procedures failed to pay timeously despite Newton being paid a management fee. I think it's very unreasonable that a factor proposed to put a 200% increase on electricity standing charges. I await your response and the process for rejecting your proposed new supplier. Thank you.
