GDPR violation
I recently explored car insurance options as my current policy is about to expire—and unsurprisingly, my insurer doubled the premium despite no claims. I came across GetSetGo Insurance during my search. While they weren’t the cheapest, that wasn’t the issue. From the moment I provided my contact details for a quote, I was bombarded with daily emails and SMS messages. I unsubscribed from the emails, which stopped, but the SMS messages continued relentlessly—even after marking them as junk and deleting them. I couldn’t find a phone number to contact them, which was already concerning. I used their website chat and spoke with a representative named Karen. I asked for my personal data to be deleted under GDPR’s right to be forgotten. Karen found my quote ID but told me the messages would only stop once my current insurance lapses—an explanation that contradicts GDPR and ePrivacy regulations. She then asked me to send a physical letter to request data deletion, despite me already making the request via chat. When I asked to escalate the issue or for her surname, I was told they only operate on a first-name basis. Yet, they require full personal details from customers. I’m still receiving SMS messages and will be reporting this to the Data Protection Commission. All of this stemmed from simply requesting a quote. Consumers should have a clear and accessible way to delete their personal data. The experience with GetSetGo Insurance was bureaucratic, dismissive, and non-compliant with EU data protection laws.
