Buying a house
The whole process of buying a house took longer than I had hoped. It feels like the modern world of emails for everything can actually be as slow as the post. On the occasions where I was able to speak to someone over the phone I found them helpful, reassuring and understanding and explaining things in a way I could understand. Getting through on the phone wasn't the easiest so email ended up being the main method of communication, at least you have evidence of what was said I guess. I did find with emails that my questions weren't always answered first time so having to repeat myself to get that clarity. Having spoken to the vendor it seemed their experience of their own solicitor was very similar. Maybe it's a workload problem that causes the delays and all legal services may be in the same position. I also think that estate agents having to be a go between slows things down too with the back and forth seeking of information. With that in mind and hindsight if I did this again I'd have tried to have all my questions ready for the vendor to try and ascertain direct things such as when the electrics were last checked, have you got instructions for devices being left etc before I'd even allocated a solicitor. I don't have anything else to compare that though. We got there in the end. It took 5 months.
