Zen Internet

All round decent ISP
I bought zen due to referral and needing a speedy install. Other ISPs were offering significant waits whereas zen were little over a week. The referral also commented on how reliable the connection was for him. My experience has been OK so far, but I am yet to be blown away. The speed is as advertised, and I generally get a steady 90-100Mbps. I do think it is quite expensive for this speed, and would have been happier with 300 for this price. We were on 300 with virgin for a similar price, it’s clearly slower. The router seems a bit of a weak point in terms of hardware. Software wise, it’s miles ahead of anything else I’ve seen provided by an ISP and is impressive, however I don’t buy that it’s better in terms of WiFi signal range. For context I have a 3 bed bungalow. The router is at the far (garden) end of the house. The signal really struggles to reach the front bedroom and drops frequently, so much so I’ve ended up with a power line feeding a ubiquity repeater. I had hoped for better results considering the lack of top floor it’s having to reach. I’m well aware of the environmental factors, but this is a plain old 1950s brick building. The kitchen also isn’t great next door. I did call up customer service about this. The call was answered in less than a minute, operator was technically sound and didn’t have to go through the scripted garbage you get with VM. This is refreshing in itself. He noted the WiFi channel was quite busy and switched this over. They do offer an everyroom service, but it’s a bit pricey for my liking when the base package is already expensive. In time I will implement my own solution over POE. Wired, the connection seems stable, I still get some buffering however I can’t say if this is the connection or server buffering. So far the positives - Really decent customer service. Really makes a difference having a skilled UK based tech to deal with. - Router has good software options for end users whom have an average skill set. Impressive. - Connection seems stable. - Zen app is functional if a little limited (couldn’t see any upgrade options). Not so positive - Pricey for the speed. I may consider an upgrade but will see how I get on. - WiFi connection isn’t so reliable more than a few meters away. Overall I’m happier with these than previous providers. I’m hoping there’s an offer on at some point to upgrade as £42 a month is heavier than I’d like, especially if I need further investment on my WiFi infrastructure.
