Planning's the key.
We have gone to Audley to plan several trips tp SE Asia. And the emphasis is on planning - they will spend time finding out what you like and don't like, and construct a trip tailored to you: not just a package. We have always travelled as a couple with a local guide and driver, but they do also arrange small group trips if you prefer. I think you do get to experience a country, its people and culture more intimately than with a package. We are fans of the Pandaw river cruises on small traditional boats, and Audley have incorporated these for us. I guess they are not the cheapest, but I would recommend anyone to talk to them about a trip and see just what they can offer.
