Scam
Yep, totally a scam. * I didn't figure it out until after the interview and I feel so bad for all the "so-and-so, thank you, you're good to go"s I heard because each one meant someone falling for it. No one should be asking you to commit/spend money on such short notice, while they wait. Even legit people doing that are scummy and you should take another look at them. BE WARY OF PRESSURE TACTICS!!! Maybe I'm naive for falling for it at all, but it didn't feel off till the end. I asked if I could have more time to decide and said in chat (directly to him, chatting to others was blocked) that it felt too good to be true. He was all -haha, I'll take that as a compliment- and said he could hold my spot till the end of the day. Still a pressure tactic by the way. Things that are too good to be true so often are. That's what clued me in to look closer, this was my 3rd attempted scam from "employers". *Since you're reading this, good job doing your research, even if you already gave them one payment, it's monthly, contact your bank and have them block the next payment so they can't get you twice!
