Broken Ignition key, broken chair, leaking van - NO compensation
We hired a fairly basic camper van in 2014 from Lucky rentals and decided to up grade to a larger van for our trip in Nov/Dec 2022. The problems started on the 2nd day when the ignition key repeatedly refused to turn in the mechanism. We discovered that the key was very worn and almost broken in two with a hairline crack at the mid point. On the 3rd day the key refused to come out of the mechanism. We had to track down a specialist auto key cutting service which meant a 160 miles detour right across the north island in the opposite direction that we had been traveling. This was very stressful 5 hour drive to get to a suitable locksmith - when he saw the condition of the key he was shocked and said "This is the worst key I have seen in 20 years of lock-smithing." Later on in our 5 week hire we discovered that the roof of the van leaked when it rained. The toilet/ shower had rainwater dripping off of the ceiling and it eventually made a large puddle on the floor. One of the fold up chairs was also very old and worn to the point that it broke the second time I sat in it. When we left the van back in Christchurch the staff simply said "oh well these things happen". They refunded the money we had spent in replacing the key and the chair but offered NO compensation for the aggravation involved or for fuel/lost time. We had a flight to catch so we were just pleased to drop the van off and go. Also just to add there were some large gaps around the "bumper" area of the front section of the camper van - I discovered the whole thing was held in place with about 10 cable ties...............that is just lazy maintenance.
