Great tour inadequate Main Guide
It was our fifth Intrepid tour and sadly the most disappointing. The itinerary was great, the accommodations really good, but sadly the tour guide, who was a new guide, was well below par. From the opening meeting in the courtyard of the hotel, with a DJ blaring away drowning out everything from him, and us. Standard opening items were missed. Throughout the trip he insisted on passing info via Whatsapp despite being told numerous times that a number of us did not have data connectivity so we could only read Whatsapp in our hotel. The Laos Tour guide was brilliant but from when we arrived in Luang Prabang our Main guide effectively dispensed with his services and we fended for ourselves. At the last minute before the sunset walk to the top of the hill in Luang Prabang he announced that we didnt have the local guide and he himself wouldn't be taking us. As a result we had to navigate ourselves there with most of the group arriving at the top after sunset had happened. He seemed to treat the Laos guide as a necessary tool just to meet the local requirements. He was keen to organise extra activities, and sing Karaoke on the boat trip (for much too long), and arranged cakes for the two people who had birthdays, (though cake at 0800 after coming off the overnight train was bizarre). He has the potential to be good guide but needs to slow down and listen to his customers. I am pleased we had four great tours before this one as it won't turn us off going back to Intrepid
