Avoid Centauro Car Hire in Heraklion
Avoid Centauro Car Hire in Heraklion – Feels Like a Scam I’ve been renting cars all over Europe for over 15 years and have never experienced anything like this. Picking up the car from Centauro Heraklion went smoothly. The shuttle service from the airport was on time, and the check-in process was efficient. However, returning the car turned into a nightmare. Upon return, a staff member pointed out a faint mark on the right side mirror. It wasn’t a scratch—just a surface streak, likely from brushing against a tree branch. I was told I had to pay €190 for this “damage.” I explained that it wasn’t actual damage and would easily come off with a proper cleaning. When I tried to show this by wiping the mark, the staff member became visibly irritated and said it wasn’t necessary—insisting I now had to pay. He told me I could pay in cash, or they would deduct it from my deposit. When I asked for clarification and said I didn’t understand how they could justify this charge, he grew more aggressive. I took photos for my own documentation, which only seemed to annoy him further. He pressured me by saying he had to finish the return process immediately or move on to the next customer. The entire interaction took no more than 3 minutes. When I insisted I wanted to talk this through, he simply left with a shuttle full of customers, leaving me behind. There were several other employees around, but no one stepped in—it was clearly a tactic. To make things worse, I noticed the two customers before me were also being charged for so-called damages—€300 and €430 respectively—with nearly identical stories. This feels like a deliberate scam operation. The way they handle returns seems designed to intimidate and extract money from unsuspecting travelers. I’ve never had an experience like this in any country. Centauro Heraklion – never again. Rent at your own risk.
