I am fortunate in that I have very rarely had to have any medical investigations or interventions, but this year I needed to have cataract surgery. My surgeon has a dedicated clinic for eye surgery that surpasses the facilities in many private hospitals. His clinic is not in my participating hospitals, but James at General & Medical Healthcare was able to obtain authorisation for funding the entire procedure rather than the 50% originally advised. It is unlikely the NHS would have carried out surgery on both eyes at the same appointment, and as a dentist this would have been a major inconvenience. Yes, my premium increased at the annual review, but that was to be expected. I value having private healthcare cover in place for the times when I need it.
