3 out of 5 stars
May 19, 2016

Excellent instruction and friendly teachers but no intervention with disruptive classmates

I would give 5 star if it wasn't for 1 things: During my first week there was one particularly assertive female student from Brazil who seemed to have something against Americans. I actually felt she was a little obsessed with me, seeking me out in the corridor or even the ladies room, insistently speaking english. Each time with obnoxious judgmental statements about "you Americans." Mainly she didn't think Americans spoke languages other than english. She shouted me down in class 3 different times literally preventing me from participating a couple of times. Once I asked the teacher a question but the Brazilian spoke first shouting "you speak english, you speak english!" It was an awkward moment that didn't make sense and the entire class was frozen in silence. The instructor continued on as if nothing had happened. Another time we were working in teams at the marker board. When I tried to participate the woman yelled loudly at me that I was wrong and stepped in front of me preventing me from reaching the marker board. Again, the entire class was silent in shock, as was I. I felt awful but not because I was wrong, my answer in the exercise was correct, but I felt belittled and did not know how to handle the agression. Never did the instructor speak up in my defense. Fortunately, that student was not there my 2nd week and my experience was so very much more pleasant.
