Ok, but still needs quite a lot of improvement
Their Chat tool is great for those who want to practice languages or pronunciation. Their only avatar is called Emma. It’s good to talk to her. Strangely enough, in the free version, she sounds a lot more human and genuine than in the Premium paid version, where she unfortunately becomes too inauthentic, over the top, and phoney. They should definitely also have other characters users can speak with: of different genders, with different voices, personalities, intonation patterns, etc. As a man trying to improve my pronunciation, I miss having a masculine voice as a reference. Mirroring a voice similar to mine would definitely allow me to make more progress. It's also weird that Emma is unaware we're having an audio conversation. She acts as if we were exchanging written messages. She sometimes says untrue things like "I can't pronounce words", of “if I had a voice, it would sound like…”. Furthermore, Talkpal’s corrections are often completely off, focussing on punctuation and written communication, even though you’re talking! That’s a big drawback! In the Premium paid version, they do have a pronunciation tool, but it only offers you two general scores, one on overall accuracy and another one on overall fluency. That’s it. They neither allow you to play back what you just said nor offer you any specific feedback on the sounds you need to improve. Overall, ok, but still needs a lot of improvement. The Premium version was not worth it for me.
