Very very upset

Very very upset. I booked a trip to the Dominican republic on April 12 and the person that I was going to go with unfortunately starter got the virus so it was after the 24 hour. And I need to cancel. Seven days of me getting online with online chat and calling about 80 times with no luck, I finally reached a representative last night who proceeded to tell me that the airline tickets will be used as a voucher only. They did refund the hotel. American Airlines will not let me do a name change on that ticket for him under no circumstances. They are not going to go. They are afraid they are going to lose their child so he does not want to travel this year and that is understandable. All I asked was that they let me either do a name change on the ticket, or I wanted them to just refund my airline tickets. Had I been able to get a hold of them, I would've fell within the cancellation guidelines. It's absolutely unreal.
