Cheap and cheerful rental in Ayia Napa
I booked a car in Ayia Napa with AutoUnion via doyouspain. Good price for 5 days, cheapest I could find online or locally. I collected the car from the office in Nissi Ave, the lady was friendly and efficient. I had booked a manual fiat panda but was upgraded to an automatic Suzuki Swift as the panda had been returned with mechanical issues. The Swift was pretty battered and had done over 100k but the staff marked all the damage on the rental agreement and encouraged me to take photos. I declined the extra insurance as I have an annual policy to cover the excess and there was no hard sell from the staff. The rental was booked as full to full fuel however the car only had 1/2 tank but was marked on the agreement as 5/8. I was ready to leave a €600 deposit block on my Barclaycard (as stated on my rental voucher) but was told it was €700 - an extra €100 for the fuel (€100 for 1/2 tank, come on!). This was annoying as it's difficult to know how much to put in to get it back to half full and a cynical person would believe this is done so that you end up putting too much in or forget altogether and just fill it up. Seems to be the norm with autounion from reading other reviews. The fuel should be full to full as per my voucher not 5/8 but actually get 4/8. The air conditioning felt like it needed a re-gas but did cool down eventually. The car was old and in poor condition but adequate for some day trips to various beaches. Before the end of the rental I called at the office to ask about extending. This was done efficiently and at a better rate than taking a new agreement so I accepted and kept the car for a further 3 days. At the end of the rental I took the obligatory photos and the car was picked up from outside our hotel - I appear to have had my deposit released. I would have given 5 stars had the car been newer, in better condition and full of fuel.
