Freelancers, Think Twice Before Using Payoneer — The Fees Are Outrageous!
Payoneer has been an incredibly frustrating experience for me as a freelancer. The fees are unreasonable for people earning small amounts, the exchange rate is disappointing, and it feels like you're constantly losing money just trying to access your own hard-earned earnings. I received €205 for my work, but Payoneer left me with €197. When I tried to withdraw the remaining balance to my own bank account, I was hit with another €8 withdrawal fee. That's €16 gone from a €205 payment, before any additional bank charges! To make matters worse, their quoted exchange rate of ₦1,344 per euro was significantly below the ₦1,400+ benchmark I was comparing it with. That's another substantial loss if you choose to convert your earnings through them. And that's not all. I've also experienced or been charged annual maintenance fees of around $25–$30, deducted around the end of the year. What makes this particularly frustrating is the lack of prior notice I experienced. Freelancers should not have to discover unexpected charges by watching their hard-earned balances shrink. How is this supposed to be a freelancer-friendly payment service? You put in the hours, deliver your work, and finally receive your payment, only to lose a significant portion to receiving fees, withdrawal fees, unfavorable exchange rates, and annual charges. These costs hit small earners particularly hard. Losing €16 on a €205 payment alone is almost 8% of your earnings. Every euro matters when freelancing is how you pay your bills. Payoneer needs to seriously reconsider its fee structure and communicate its charges transparently. Customers deserve clear advance notice of fees and a fairer way to access their money. My advice to fellow freelancers: carefully check Payoneer's receiving fees, withdrawal charges, exchange rates, and annual fees before relying on the platform. Explore alternatives and calculate the actual amount you'll receive, not just the amount your client sends. Our hard-earned money deserves better transparency and more reasonable charges.
