Clayton Hotel, Cambridge - great visitor experience
Having had to cancel our eagerly anticipated overseas holiday for which we've been saving for a long time, we have had a couple of mini-breaks since hotels re-opened on 4th July. Having stayed at several other Clayton Hotels where everything is consistently good, we felt confident that the Clayton Hotel in Cambridge would meet expectations and, in the light of Covid-19, adhere to stringent health and safety measures. It did not disappoint. Simple online check in procedures were put in place, one could watch a short video online where the CEO welcomes patrons back and explains sanitisation processes. We received a warm welcome. Our room was inviting - crisp linen, huge comfortable bed, sparkling clean bathrooom with luxury Irish designer Paul Costelloe toiletries and plenty of fluffy towels and a power shower. All surfaces have been decluttered to minimise contamination. Crockery has been replaced by disposable cups and stirrers - a sensible, reassuring precautionary practice. Clients and staff all maintained social distancing and wore masks in public areas. Hand sanitisers were in the lobby and even inside the lift, which impressed us. Also, we saw hotel personnel cleaning in the common parts throughout our stay. There were notices indicating guidance on safety - prominent but without detracting from the lovely ambience of the hotel. We haven't been in Cambridge for a while. Ahead of our stay, we spoke with Megan who had very good knowledge of the area and gave helpful suggestions as did her colleagues on Reception after check in. A map and directions were readily provided. The central location (next to the mainline station) and ease of parking nearby make the Clayton, Cambridge an excellent visitor destination. It's a great walking city - within a short distance of the hotel; there is plenty to see and do despite some attractions obviously being closed at this time. Furthermore, if you're an Irish patron, you probably love the sport of the turf! The National Horse Racing Museum, Newmarket is just 30 minutes away. Fortified by a very substantial breakfast at The Clayton we had a great day there. (Nb: the menu offers a full English breakfast but with delicious black pudding and hash browns included, I'd say it could be re-branded as... a full Irish!) We plan to return to the Clayton, Cambridge in the not-too-distant future and will certainly use it as a base to stay when we visit for the award winning Christmas Market at City Hall and Market Square. In our opinion, there will never be a better time to visit - there are few tourists or students in the city. It's an opportunity to enjoy the environs of Cambridge in a leisurely way without crowds and the Clayton is a relaxing haven.
