Incredible data with very dated tools
Ancestry has a remarkable repository of data, and has made a profound contribution to genealogy over the years. So if you've never done any genealogical research, this is a powerful place to start and you will have a four star experience. On the other hand, if you've been at it a while, as I have, Ancestry has merely plodded along as a tool. Its search capabilities have not changed appreciably in 20 years despite at least two new generations of search technology being commonplace on the web since they created their search- hence 2 stars. There is so much more that could be gleaned from their data, but they are down the rabbit hole on DNA features that have nothing to do with genealogy. Even there, their testing could be much more valuable on the Y-DNA (paternal) side, but their testing seems to favor mitochondrial DNA (mother's side). But they can tell you if your pee smells after you eat asparagus. Seriously. How does that help genealogical research?
