Disappointing Experience with EconomyBookings and Panek – Misleading Terms and Poor Customer Support

I recently had a frustrating experience with EconomyBookings while renting a vehicle in Poland through their partner company, Panek. The online booking process was smooth; however, problems arose when I arrived at the rental desk. As expected, I was asked to present my driver’s license, passport, and credit card — all standard requirements. Unexpectedly, I was also asked to provide an International Driving Permit (IDP). This was surprising, as UK license holders are generally not required to have an IDP when driving in Poland, especially if they are EU citizens. I explained that I did not have an IDP because I am a Polish passport holder — an EU citizen — and therefore not subject to this requirement. However, Panek insisted on enforcing a clause from their terms and conditions stating that non-EU citizens must present an IDP. This clearly should not have applied to me, as I hold Polish citizenship, despite residing in the UK. Despite my explanation, I was forced to purchase full coverage insurance from Panek or be denied access to the vehicle. With no alternative transportation and pressing needs, I had no choice but to pay. Following this, I contacted EconomyBookings to request a refund, providing full details. Unfortunately, they declined, stating that I listed my residency as the UK. This response ignored the legal distinction between residency and citizenship — a crucial difference in this context. Because of their refusal to resolve the issue fairly, I have initiated legal proceedings against EconomyBookings and possibly Panek to not been obligated to the laws under Brexit form. A simple, customer-friendly refund could have avoided all of this. I share this experience to caution other travelers. If you are booking through EconomyBookings — particularly with Panek — double-check all terms and conditions carefully and be aware of how inconsistently policies may be applied.
