Beware - Not always free care for European Health Card holders

If you are a citizen from the European Economic Area (EU+ Iceland, Norway and Liechtenstein) and need medical services in the South of Tenerife... please note that this Hospitén Sur close to Playa de las Américas, Los Cristianos and Adeje is a "concertado" hospital (private with agreement with Social Security in Spain). This means that the agreement does not cover all treatments for free even if you come with the European Health Insurance card. If you need a public hospital in the South you can go instead to Arona, Hospital del Sur in Tenerife. That one is public and is not so far. They do not have all specialities though. This was the experience of our daughter on 26 June 2024. After being examined they told her the services needed would require an specialist (and ingreso) and that would cost her money. On the phone they had previously told me she would be welcome with the European Health Card because they had an agreement with the Social Security (concierto). The other good alternative for a public Hospital is the one in La Candelaria near Santa Cruz. This one has all specialities and a very good reputation.
