Empty Gas Bottle
When we did our vehicle induction with one of the Lucky Rentals employees, they gave the gas bottle a shake and said it was fine and about halfway full. We didn't question why we weren't given a full gas bottle as we assumed that was standard practice. We had a 16-day road trip of the NZ South Island, staying at powered sites with shared camp kitchens, however had three nights booked near the start of our trip at Mount Cook NP at a non-powered camping area. We arrived and used the gas bottle for the first time to boil a small pot of water and the gas turned off. The gas bottle was not half full, but on empty. We could not cook any of our food and was told by the company to drive to the nearest town Twizel (47 min drive) to get a refill. This was not an option for us as we wanted to enjoy the full length of time, we had booked at Mount Cook plus the wasted fuel costs. After persistently negotiating with the company, they did finally agree that if we kept a receipt of the gas bottle refill purchase, they would reimburse the price. At the start of this conversation, they were not willing to accept fault, but glad they made this concession. We ended up cutting our trip short by a day cause our food started to defrost and we couldn't cook. So we headed to Twizel and guess what? There were no gas refills in the town available. We ended up not purchasing any refills for the remaindered of our trip because we were staying at powered sites with camp kitchens available. Upon return of our vehicle, we explained our gas bottle debacle to one of the employees who said 'oh we have full gas bottles here for people to take upon their van pick up. You should have been given a full gas bottle'. So annoying.
