Toujours en Paris
Our tour guide John could not have been better. Of course, a few logistical challenges and itinerary changes popped up over the course of the week, but he was able to alter plans and schedules quickly and without any major problems. He had deep knowledge of the language, history, and culture of France, and also of wider Europe. He was also very friendly. He knew the Paris Metro well. Just wonderful. Three out of four hotels were very good to excellent, the other was acceptable but in need of renovation and some things in the room didn't work properly. Breakfast at the hotels were all good to excellent in terms of variety and quality. Hotel Lorette Opera in Paris had the standout best breakfast and lobby amenities. Merkur in Saint Malo had the nicest room overall, but Lorette and Kyriad (Tours) were also fine. Villa Modigliani in Paris had a nice location, but the room was not as clean and somewhat rundown. The control for towel warmer in the bathroom was broken and the warmer was on the whole time, heating up the room and warring with the room AC. The card entry system was down for nearly 24 hrs which made it a real pain getting in and out of the room. Overall not a great experience at that hotel. Dinners were all good. My two favorites were at Bistrot a deux tetes and Les Gourmandes de Notre Dame, both in Paris. Of the sites we visited, my favorites were Mont Saint Michel and the American Cemetery in Normandy. Also enjoyed the grounds at Chambord and Versailles.
