Do not book with this airline

Do not book with this airline! We flew with them to Vietnam in September 2018. To say it was a 12 hour flight, we had one meal at the beginning of the flight and one an hour before we landed and nothing in between! People were having to go to the back of the plane to ask the steward's for something to eat. This was the same with the drinks, the service was terrible. I wanted my window blind up as it was early afternoon and I got asked to close it because people were trying to sleep - I laughed and said no way - it was the AFTERNOON!! I think the crew just want to get you fed, shut you up and then see you again an hour before landing - terrible service!

Good airlines …

I fly domestic with Vietnam Airlines almost every year. No complaints at all. The food is always pleasant.

Won’t use again

Had to send my food back three times as it was cold (I don’t mind cold food but this was not safe as it was chicken). They snapped the neck of my expensive guitar in two (although the case was covered in fragile stickers), then effectively blamed me, not offering any compensation, only a “good will gesture” of a fraction of the price needed to replace the guitar. Won’t use them again.

Strange liquid from the ceiling

I was sitting in a seat (2C, business class) on a flight from Ho Chi Minh to Bangkok. Shortly after take-off, I noticed a sticky brown liquid falling from the ceiling onto my shirt. I could eventually move to another seat, but by that time the liquid had stained my shirt and the undershirt I was wearing. Of course, these things can happen with other airlines (though I've never had liquid falling onto me before in a plane), but what has really disappointed me is the poor customer service of Vietnam Airlines. I asked how I might claim for compensation? After about one week, I received a generic response stating that they would pass my concerns onto the relevant department so that the same issue would not reoccur. The customer service team has entirely ignored all other attempts to resolve the situation. Be careful (and bring tissues!).

Don't do it - Don't book with this airline

Oh Dear! - However tempted you are by their ultra low prices, remember, you get what you pay for - or in my case, you get nothing. I bought a business class ticket from Singapore to London after enroling in their lotus loyalty program. Paid the fees and checked my account to see the ticket was booked. Unusually, I didn't receive a confirmation email although I did get a confirmation number when the booking was made. Next day, still no email confirmation from them so logged back in to their loyalty program only to be told they had cancelled my booking. I tried all the number listed on their web site and none of them connected, just dead numbers. Imagine I hadn't checked and just turned up at the airport? Never received anything from them nor could I talk to anyone at the airline. Called my credit card company and checked that I hadn't been charged and rebooked with BA. I have used Qatar Airways extensively but they are getting too expensive now, Vietnam Airlines seemed like a viable alternative but I wouldn't recommend you waste your time and money

I love travelling to Asia but have …

I love travelling to Asia but have never flown with VN airlines so I thought I' give them a try. I joint their Lotus programme and booked my flights. I flew business class Lhr to Hanoi then on to Denang in the same class. The seats/bed were very comfortable on the 787 and the lay out was 1-2-1 so every passenger has an isle seat. The seats to Denang were also comfortable. What I didn't like was none of the crew spoke very good English and it was hard to communicate with them. The food and on board entertainment was awful, there was also very little choice from the menu. By the time the cabin crew got to row 3 where I was sitting to take my dinner order the starters that I picked had already all gone and there was only 5 people that had ordered before me. The staff on the flight were very polite and did all they could to accommodate my needs. The problem I have with this airline is the office staff they just completely ignored my emails that I repeatedly sent complaining that my lotus account hadn't been credited with my miles. When they finely did contact me they said they needed to see my boarding passes and my passport so that they can check my claim. I explained that I gave you my booking reference for my flights and my membership number to my lotus account which both have the same info Name, d.o.b, email, address and phone number so why on earth would you want to see my passport and boarding passes. I don't collect boarding pass stubs. So now what no stubs no airmiles I asked. I haven't yet received a reply. This has been going on for over a month now. I'm going back to Vietnam over the Christmas holidays but I don't think I will be flying with VN airlines. Back to BA I suppose.

I wanted to like Vietnam Airways but …

I really wanted to like Vietnam Airlines but frankly, my first and only experience with it is that I wouldn't choose them again. Very poor communication starts with their website not making clear that you’ll be slogged a huge currency conversion fee because their payment provider is somewhere offshore. For a $1100 booking this was $33. Then they don’t tell you whether or not your fare is eligible for a ‘transit tour package’ (ie. stopover hotel) and my email to their Sydney office inquiring about the same was ignored. Check-in online is impossible except for flights departing Vietnam, and so there was a heaving mass of people still checking in well past the 60-minutes-before-departure deadline at SYD and the flight arrived almost two hours late in SGN. As a result anybody on certain connecting flights missed their international connections (resulting 18 hours in a Saigon airport lounge; without a potentially expensive, pre-arranged visa you are stuck in the airport!) Don't bother with Optiontown seat options; the plane was full to the brim. Likewise, anybody trying to get their tax back (the tourist refund scheme or TRS) missed their opportunity (it cost me $505 in lost refunds as everyone just had to go straight to the plane). No announcements or explanations of course; the captain’s English was unintelligible in any case; I had minimal faith in their ability to deal with anything that might’ve gone wrong. The 787 was nice and new but the economy chairs were wafer thin and you felt every object in the seat pocket behind. My IFE system kept crashing despite staff efforts to reboot. Definitely not the airline for a stress-free booking & flight experience.
