Do your research before signing up for PE treatment
I had a call yesterday with someone from Men’s Health Clinic called about their premature ejaculation treatment. I asked how they were different from online providers like Hims, because I didn’t want something that was just a short-term fix. The treatment was explained to me as “customised medication” and more of a 6–12 month “rehabilitation” programme, with the idea being that you eventually reduce the medication and hopefully don’t need it anymore. When I asked what was actually in the medication, I was told it included an SSRI, which is a type of antidepressant. I then asked whether there were any side effects from taking an SSRI. The answer I received focused mainly on tiredness and nausea. While still on the call, I looked up SSRI side effects myself, and it seemed clear to me that the possible side effects go well beyond that. The adviser then sent me a link to look at the positive feedback the clinic has received. I did what I think most people would do and started by checking the lowest / negative reviews as well, to get a balanced picture. That is when I saw concerns being raised about paroxetine, withdrawal symptoms, raised blood pressure, weight gain, sleep disruption and sexual side effects. I raised those points on the call, but I didn’t feel they were really addressed directly. The response was more around side effects being rare, the clinic having positive reviews, and the treatment being customised. I also asked whether this is actually a permanent solution, or whether SSRIs mainly work while you are taking them. The answer became a lot less clear at that point. I was told there are no guarantees, that some patients may need to stay on treatment, and that others may extend treatment further. Based on that call, I personally wouldn’t proceed. Anyone considering this should ask very clearly what SSRI is being prescribed, what dose, what the withdrawal risks are, what sexual side effects are possible, what monitoring is done, and whether there is evidence that the benefit continues once the SSRI is stopped.
