I’ve never had to make a claim on…

I’ve never had to make a claim on insurance before but I thought I would get cover by a well rated company when I booked my trip to Japan in 2019. Unfortunately in March 2020 a family member died (non COVID related), I called the helpline, they told me to book a flight home and back I came to be with my family. 9 months later I am still waiting after emailing for months being sent around in circles trying to provide documents that, at this time in the world with Covid, just do not exist. First the interim death certificate was not sufficient, next I needed to provide proof I didn’t take my original planned flight home (even though all flights were cancelled for months) and the document provided was not what would typically be received, and now I cannot be given the refund to my flight until I prove the exact refund amount I am due to receive from the original airline for the unused flight. Cathay pacific are not answering and still have not processed the refund for my partially unused flight. Is there any end in sight, next I’ll be told it’s been too long and my claim is no longer valid. What terms did I not meet? If you can’t even be covered when a family member dies, then what is the point in getting travel insurance?!
